Summer means STEM Camp season! Adding a drone or aerial robotics segment or a drone focus to your STEM camp line-up can excite and engage your students. Before you start, here are the basics:
Follow FAA Guidelines for Recreational/Educational Users:
- Keeping the drone below 400 feet
- Keep the drone within eye sight
- Most educational drones used at camps weigh more than 1/2 lb. so they need to be registered.

Drones stay below 100’
At OnPoynt we recommend drones fly below 100’; the higher a drone goes, the harder it is to see and control. As recreational drone pilots, we never want to interfere with real aircraft that fly in and out nearby airports. As we train students and educators, we start with individual flight time with small area flying- learning to control the drone under 100’ and in small box-shaped area.
Use adjustable altitude and distance limiters
A key safety component of the drone sold in our STEM Ranger Education Kits is the adjustable altitude and distance limiters, heading-independent flight modes and lost signal fail-safes. If your camp drones don’t have these features, your team will need to closely supervise your campers to make sure you operate safely and within the FAA guidelines.
Establish and use a flight line
OnPoynt recommends a flight line, field markers of some kind to designate where the drone takes off & lands, where student flight teams stand and where viewers should congregate. There is a great video on the Drone Ranger™ YouTube Channel to help instructors understand how to set this up.
Designate Teams with specific roles
We utilize specific assignments for each camper for STEM scenarios so students function as team and communicate with each other to take information acquired by the drone to make a decision. We stress that drones are “Tools, not Toys” and designating individual duties and responsibilities helps reinforce this idea and the need for teamwork to accomplish an objective or task.
